Part of being alive is partaking in what nature has to offer. The planet is filled with so many edible things, and each country has its own unique cuisine. In our lifetime, we should be so lucky to have tried at least more than a couple of cuisines other than that of our native country. There are however literally hundreds more that are equally as superb that will titillate your taste buds. With so many types of food and so little time, how would you know which ones should be on top of your bucket list? Here are some general guidelines on how you can find out about cuisines and eat food around the world.
Travelling and Food
At least a couple of times in your life, you will be travelling abroad for either a vacation or a business trip. As such, you will be exposed to another cuisine that is different than your own. Make it a point to try everything at least once. That is part of being alive. Travelling gives you a chance to try food that will be quite exotic for your taste and could be a very exhilarating experience. A word of warning: as you will be eating this outside of your normal diet, be wary of the ingredients used for food in another country you are in. You might get indigestion, diarrhoea or an upset stomach since you won’t be used to what will be served as your meal. Food and travel always go hand in hand unless you want to be stuck in your own little world. Be sure to try everything you can when you have the opportunity as you may never be back in the same place twice, which would be a total shame.
Watching Cooking Programs and Travelling Shows
If you aren’t sure what the big world has to offer you, one way to catch a glimpse of foreign food is through watching travel programs on TV. More often than not, these shows will give you a detailed description on what a particular country has to offer in terms of national cuisine, exotic food items and the regular diet of the people in that place is. Shows like these will be able to provide you with a small taste on what you could come across with if you choose to visit a particular country. If you’re particularly into food or your profession demands that you have an intensive knowledge of it, these programs will help you gain a better understanding on what the history or culture is of a country when it comes to their food. There are a lot of best food shows/channels on TV and even on the Internet.
Food on the Internet
One of the benefits of being online is visiting websites that feature food or teach you how to cook a foreign cuisine. Information about this is readily available for free and everyone can gain access to them. Much like TV programs, there are websites that provide text, photos and even videos such as travel blogs which feature food from around the world. As such, you will be able to get an idea of what you could taste from the intensive details that will be given by the writer or the host of the program.
Right in Your Neighbourhood
The great thing about living in this day and age is that food from another country can be available right in your area. People nowadays have a taste for the exotic. You see Americans eating Chinese or Mediterranean food a lot and vice versa. The best thing is, if a restaurant serves authentic cuisine, you are in luck. It is as if you’ve stepped into a teleportation device and stepped into another country in an instant! Of course, no two restaurants are alike. Sometimes, you will have a certain type of food that will be “adjusted” to suit your native country’s taste. It is like that since restaurants would want people to be interested in something new, yet taste something familiar at the same time. On the other hand, some restaurants are insistent on keeping it authentic for those who want a taste of what the real deal is.
Cookbooks
When all else fails, you can always rely on a good cookbook to teach you a thing or two about food from other countries. Although you will only have a picture to go along with the text and not much detail to go with them, it’s better than nothing. On the other hand, you could learn a lot just by reading if you have a cookbook which will teach you the origins of a country’s food and how it came to be. Of course, it would be better to have a visual to gain a better understanding but books are nonetheless equally informative.
